Originally Made for Australia's First Archbishop

Originally crafted in 1850 by renowned Sydney cabinetmaker Andrew Lenehan for Australia's first Archbishop, John Bede Polding, this exceptional Australian cedar bookcase is a piece of considerable historical significance. Remaining within the same family since it was first commissioned more than 170 years ago, it represents an important part of Australia's early colonial furniture heritage.

Aubert Furniture was entrusted with the conservation and restoration of this remarkable piece. The work was carried out by Greg Aubert using traditional conservation principles, with every effort made to preserve the bookcase's originality, character and historical integrity. Original surfaces, patina and evidence of age were carefully retained, including historic cracks to the original glass, which form part of the bookcase's provenance and story rather than being replaced.

Conservation projects of this calibre require a thoughtful and sympathetic approach, balancing structural stability with the preservation of the features that give a piece its historical authenticity. It was a privilege for Greg to contribute to the ongoing preservation of one of Australia's significant items of colonial furniture.
