This beautiful Australian cedar chest, dating from around 1870, came into the workshop for minor restoration and repair work after previously being restored some years earlier. While the cabinet remained in good overall condition, sections of the cross-banded plinth moulding had become detached, the drawers had begun rubbing on the drawer stops, and the finish had lost some of its lustre.
The necessary repairs were carried out before the original finish was carefully cleaned and lightly French polished. Because the finish remained in sound condition, there was no need to strip the cabinet back to bare timber. This conservation approach preserves the original colour, age and natural patina that are impossible to recreate once removed, while restoring the depth and warmth of the finish.
The result is a beautifully refreshed cedar chest that once again operates smoothly while retaining the authenticity, character and history that only an original antique finish can provide.
